Short AR-15 Uppers for Your SBR Build
The $200 federal tax on SBRs is gone. If you want to turn the AR-15 rifle you already own into an SBR, a complete short upper is the simplest way to do it. Here is every One Horse complete upper, and what to do before you install one.
Drop-in fit
Built for any standard mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver.
BCG included
M16 Black Nitride BCG and a standard charging handle come installed. The BCG is also sold on its own as our 300 BLK bolt carrier group.
American made
Made in the U.S.A. and backed by a limited lifetime warranty.
Quick answer
One Horse sells four short complete uppers: 7.5″ and 10.5″ in 5.56/.223, and 7.5″ and 10.5″ in .300 BLK. Each one comes with a BCG and charging handle and fits a mil-spec AR-15 lower. The $200 tax stamp is gone. And effective October 9, 2026, ATF says it will no longer enforce NFA approval and registration for short-barreled rifles and suppressors. This is an ATF enforcement policy, not a change in the law, and it could change. Check current ATF guidance and your state law before you build.

The basics
What changed for SBRs
A shoulder stock on a barrel under 16 inches makes a short-barreled rifle. The $200 tax stamp is gone.
And effective October 9, 2026, ATF says it will no longer enforce NFA approval and registration for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and AOWs, nationwide.
This is an ATF enforcement policy, not a change in the law, and it could change. State and local laws still apply. Check current ATF guidance and your state law before you build.
Before you install
- Check your state and local law.
- Check current ATF guidance. The enforcement policy could change.
- Keep your 16″ upper if you want to switch back to a rifle setup.
