Most people spend money on the muzzle end of an AR and never think twice about the four ounces of steel and tungsten living in the receiver extension. That’s a mistake. The buffer is the cheapest, fastest way to change how a rifle actually feels and functions — and it’s the first thing a builder should look at when a gun is running rough, beating itself up, or throwing brass into the next county.

Every time an AR fires, gas drives the bolt carrier group rearward, the buffer compresses the spring, and the whole assembly slams back into battery. That sequence has to happen in a specific window. Too fast, and the carrier tries to extract while pressure is still high, the brass gets abused, the bolt bounces on the way back into battery, and the rifle punishes itself and the shooter. Too slow, and the carrier doesn’t travel far enough to reliably strip the next round.
A heavier buffer slows the carrier’s rearward travel and extends its time in the tube before returning to battery. That does three useful things:
Barrel length, gas port size, gas system length, suppressor use, ammunition, and adjustable gas blocks all move the target. That’s why one buffer weight doesn’t cover the whole catalog — and why we built three.
Roughly 0.8 oz over standard carbine weight, using an internal tungsten insert to increase density without changing the external length. This is the correction for a rifle that’s slightly overgassed — the one that runs fine but ejects at 1 o’clock, or feels sharper than it should with a mid-length gas system.
Best fit: carbine and mid-length 5.56 builds, 14.5″–16″ barrels, unsuppressed shooting where you want to take the edge off without risking short-stroking.
Roughly 1.7 oz over standard carbine weight, achieved with a dual tungsten weight configuration inside a mil-spec carbine-length body. External dimensions match standard and H1 buffers, so it drops straight in.
This is the workhorse of the three, and for most builders it’s the right first purchase. It’s enough mass to meaningfully slow the carrier and settle a rifle down, without going so heavy that you have to start thinking about spring rate and gas port diameter.
Best fit: short-barrel builds, pistol-length gas systems, suppressed shooting, and anything running hot ammunition. If you’re bringing a can into the equation, start here.
The highest-mass option in the lineup, built with a full tungsten weight stack to maximize density inside a standard carbine-length footprint. It absorbs a greater share of the recoil impulse before it reaches the receiver, and it’s the answer for platforms that are genuinely overdriven.
Best fit: heavily suppressed SBRs, pistol-gas 10.3″–11.5″ builds, and shooters chasing the flattest possible cycle. Fair warning — H3 is a real change. If a rifle is only marginally overgassed, this may take you past the point of reliable cycling with weaker loads. Test it.

If you don’t want to overthink it:
If you want to do it right, watch the brass. An overgassed AR ejects forward, roughly 1 to 2 o’clock, and often dents case mouths on the deflector. A properly timed one throws brass to 3 or 4 o’clock in a tight, consistent pile. Undergassed drifts back toward 5 o’clock, with failures to lock back on an empty mag.
Change one variable at a time. Add buffer weight, shoot a magazine, check the pile. If you’re running an adjustable gas block, dial gas after you’ve settled on buffer weight — mass first, then gas.
