Operation Hump
The 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry — 173rd Airborne — walked into a dug-in, larger Viet Cong force at the foot of Hill 65. Men fixed bayonets. Forty-nine Americans did not come home.
The medic
Specialist Lawrence Joel, shot twice, kept treating the wounded until he was ordered out — the first living African American since the Spanish-American War to receive the Medal of Honor.
Why we drop on it
Niles Harris was wounded on that hillside and lived. Every 8th of November he puts on a suit and raises a drink to the men who didn't. We build for the people who carry the weight. This one goes out on their day.
